Visit the Maropeng Visitor Centre is an award-winning, world-class exhibition, focusing on the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few million years.

Take a journey through time, starting with the formation of the planet and moving all the way through the evolutionary processes that culminated in the world as we know it today.

See fossils, learn about how humankind was born, view stone tools that are up to one million years old, and much more. This self-guided, interactive tour allows you to take all the time you need to ponder humanity’s fascinating origin story.

After this experience take a short drive to the Sterkfontein Caves, the home of Mrs Ples and little foot, both said to be the best and oldest examples of Australopithecus africanus which is said to be a distant relative of all humankind. Walk down the many steps into the chilly cave and see how Dr Robert Broom and his team worked to discover and uncover these fascinating fossils.

*Take note it is 119 steps down and 115 steps back up and cave temperature is at 18 deg celsius.

Some tight spaces are encountered at the end and caution should be taken if claustrophobic spaces are 1m x 1.5m at times otherwise caves are big and roomy
